!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
A guy I work with has way too much time and money on his hands. He loves Land Rovers but can't stand the reliability (or lack thereof) and lack of power. Using the resources he had, he's managed to design and build a kit to drop in an LS motor with ease and maintain 4WD.
http://www.defendersource.com/forum/showthre…
Copied from his Thread ;
Ok, here we go. I have developed a bolt-in solution for the GM Gen IV LS engine and 6L80E transmission that couples to the LT230. The LT230 is exactly in the stock position. I think I will just post a few pictures and let it sink in. I made a run of five adapters to start.
The Gen IV truck engines fit. LMG, LC9, LY5, LY6, L92, LSA For the defender, the truck intake clears the hood when you turn it 180 degress. The low car intake fits the Discovery. Yes, this fits Discovery 1 and Classics too.
No mods to the steering box. I will be providing a new aluminum radiator.
There are about 20 configuration changes to two computers. (Can be done with HP Tuners) The ECU and the TCU which is inside the transmission.
There have been several people asking what engine or package to buy from GM. (new engine)
Currently, GM Performance doesn't offer a suitable engine/trans package for this conversion. They have three different offerings...
Crate Engine
Connect & Cruise
E-ROD
Crate Engine
GM does offer the LC9 (5.3L aluminum) truck engine as a crate option. Part number 19259918. (~$5,000) This can be used on this conversion. Available from Summit, Jegs...
Connect & Cruise
This package comes with a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , ECM, and optionally a transmission. Problem is GM Performance doesn't off the 6L80e transmission, yet. Therefore, any package engines won't have the correct ECM and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .
E-ROD
This package is the Connect & Cruise plus down pipes/cats and is California legal. Here again, since the 6L80e is not offered, it has the same problems as Connect & Cruise. Don't wast you money on this one. You will have to scap the down pipes/cat, exhaust manifolds, ECM and harness. Then you are left with the Crate Motor and no CA compliance.
So what are the options? You can purchase the LC9 Crate Motor from GM Performance, a 6L80e trans from the dealer (~$2800), and a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! from the dealer (~$200), and an ECM from Amazon. This won't work in California as a donor VIN is required for an "engine change". I an not sure what other states require.
Will a Car Engine work?
Car engines can be used outside of California. However, the oil pan and pickup, water pump, and possibly the crank pulley will have to be changed. There are three pulley offsets. Close, medium, and long. The truck water pump is required here and uses the long pulley.

So easy a caveman could do it. Unfortunately, the neolithics like the Rover V8 - for reasons we can't really articulate.
Bellhousing adapters and other parts have been available to Chevy patterns for years, but an LS is the only thing even close to acceptable. OG smallblocks are just too heavy.

It's very common, a lot of Land Rover enthusiasts don't really care what engine they have in their Rovers. I've seen ones with Merc diesels, Ford V6's, Chevy small blocks ect...

Similar size/factor engine swaps generally aren't - in principle. The devil is in the details. He's made it significantly harder by making his break at the transfer case instead of the bellhousing, but I guess he really likes GM autos...
If you're just joining at the bellhousing and going manual, the GM 10.4 clutch can swap parts with a standard Rover one leaving a mixed clutch in the Rover bellhousing with just an adapter. The Rover stick trans is pricier and not quite as rugged, but I'm not sure why you'd want an auto that bad in any case.
The "easy" LS swap would be to a mixed clutch, adapter plate, and special mounts/hoses. That's not what he's doing, just similar.

I think it is awesome someone has gone to the trouble of figuring this out. I'd love to see GM's 4 cyl. diesel (in the Cruze in the US) + manual trans + Ricardo's Hyboost system

At the expense & trouble of the GM v8 conversion, an easier option if you want a lux suv, that does well off road + damn reliable... get a Lexus LX series since it's nothing more than a land cruiser in a tux.
Now excuse me, I need to go get my flame suit on! :)

Hey @mr_gofast...I’m thinking of getting a Defender with a 19J engine in it, all original. Not sure if it has the LT230 transfer box or not. From your experience, do all Defenders come stock with that LT230? I’m super interested in your post, can I give you a call? Email me your number...abelmedrano2@gmail.com. Thanks!
